It can be hard to know what’s truth.

We’re emotional creatures, and quite often we interpret truth as whatever reality we’ve experienced. But what if your experience was a false construct? What if the people who said they loved you were actually mistreating you and calling it love? What if you were emotionally conditioned to be afraid of things that are good for you? What if your perception of truth was built on a foundation of someone else’s lies?

The words we speak to ourselves, about ourselves, are powerful. Have you ever practiced saying God’s word out loud to yourself, to combat negative thinking patterns? I call these “Truth Statements”.

When you struggle with how to replace the lies that have become the toxic soundtrack in your mind, say these truth statements out loud to yourself instead:

• Write them down in a prayer journal.

• Record them in your own voice and play them while you fall asleep.

• Post sticky notes on your bathroom mirror.

Do whatever it takes to put the truth about God’s feelings for you, in your mind and keep it there! Here are some of the truth statements I read and say to myself, so you can listen to them out loud:

Truth about identity

When trouble comes my way I consider it an opportunity for great joy.
When my faith is tested, my endurance has a chance to grow.
So I let it grow, because when my endurance is fully developed I will be perfect and complete.
I will need nothing.
When I need wisdom, I ask my generous God, and he gives it to me.
My faith is in God alone and I do not waver.
— James 1:2-6

God empowers me with inner strength from his unlimited resources.
My heart is Christ’s home because I trust in him.
I am deeply rooted in God‘s love, and it keeps me strong.
I experience the love of Jesus daily, even though I cannot comprehend it fully.
Jesus makes me complete.
I have abundance, life, and power, straight from God.
— Ephesians 3:16-19

I am restored.
I am supported.
I am strengthened.
I am standing on a firm foundation.
— 1 Peter 5:10

I am a chosen woman.
I am a royal priestess.
I am a holy nation.
I am God’s very own possession.
I can show others the goodness of God.
I have been called out of darkness.
I live in the light.
— 1 Peter 2:9

I am a new creature in Christ: old things have passed away, all things are new.
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

I have died and have been raised with Christ and now I am seated in heavenly places.
— Ephesians 2:5-6

I am dead to sin and alive in righteousness.
— Romans 6:11

I am anointed of God for ministry.
— Luke 4:18

Truth about fear

I wait quietly.
I am not shaken.
No enemy can reach me.
My victory and honor come from God.
— Psalm 62

Many plans are in my heart, but the purpose of the LORD will prevail. I do not direct my own steps.
— Proverbs 19:21; Jeremiah 10:23

My kingdom (my household) is at PEACE. God has given me REST on every side.
We are no longer under attack.
— 2 Chronicles 20:30

I place all my worries on Jesus, because He cares about me.
— 1 Peter 5:7

I don’t operate from a spirit of fear, because God has given me power, love and a clear mind.
— 2 Timothy 1:7

No weapon that is formed against me shall prosper, but every tongue that rises against me in judgment, I shall show to be in the wrong.
— Isaiah 54:17

Truth about love

My husband loves me as Christ loves the church, and gives himself for me.
— Ephesians 5:25

My husband cherishes my gifts as assets not liabilities,
he trusts me and is not intimidated by my capabilities and virtues.
He praises the woman I am and boasts about my accomplishments.
He thinks I’m the most amazing woman in the world.
— Proverbs 31:11,28-29

I am a wife of noble character. I am worth far more than rubies.
— Proverbs 31:10

My husband has set me like a seal upon his heart. His love is strong and unquenchable.
I have captured my husband’s heart.
— Song of Solomon 4:9, 8:6-7

I am my husband’s lover, and he is mine. He awakens passionate desires in me and tells me I am perfect and beautiful beyond words.
— Song of Songs 6:3,9,12

My husband is wise. He is a wise and humble spiritual leader in our home.
He makes godly decisions.
— Proverbs 31:10-12; Revelation 1:6 KJV; Proverbs 21:1

Truth about family

All my household are blessed in what we do:
we’re blessed when we come in and when we go out.
— Deuteronomy 28:6

My children make right choices according to the Word of God.
— Psalm 119:130; Isaiah 54:13

My children have lots of Christian friends, and God has set aside a Christian wife or husband for each of them.
— 1 Corinthians 15:33

My children love to pray and study the Word. They openly and boldly praise God.
— 2 Timothy 2:15

My children are safe and protected.
God has restored what was plundered and released us from captivity.
— Isaiah 49:25

Truth about thinking

I am a victorious thought-warrior.
I destroy false arguments, because God’s thoughts fill my head.
— 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

I reject worldly weapons and and use God’s mighty weapons against the devil’s strongholds in my mind.
— 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

My thoughts obey Christ, because I capture every rebellious thought and destroy it.
— 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

I am what I think about in my heart; therefore, all my thoughts are positive. I do not allow Satan to use my spirit as a garbage dump by meditating on negative things that he offers me.
— Proverbs 23:7 KJV

I have a teachable attitude.
— 2 Timothy 2:24

I do not think more highly of myself than I ought to.
— Romans 12:3

Truth about speaking

I don’t speak negative things.
— Ephesians 4:29

I have decided that my mouth shall not break God’s laws.
I will talk about the righteousness of God all day long.
— Psalm 17:3; Psalm 35:28

I never hurt a sister or brother with the words of my mouth.
— Matthew 18:18 KJV

I am always a positive encouragement. I edify and build up; I never tear down or destroy.
— Romans 15:2

I am slow to speak, quick to hear, and slow to anger.
— James 1:19

Truth about money

All that I own is paid for. I owe no man anything except love in Christ.
— Romans 13:8

God has given me double for the losses I have experienced, and He fills my home with love, joy and peace.
— Isaiah 61:7

I prosper in everything I put my hand to.
I have prosperity in all areas of my life–spiritually, financially, mentally, and socially.
— Jeremiah 29:11

I am a giver. It is more blessed to give than to receive.
I love to give! I have plenty of money to give away all the time.
— Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 9:7-8

I am not passive about anything, but I deal with things in my life immediately.
— Proverbs 27:23; Ephesians 5:15-16

Truth about feeling

I have been set free.
I am free to love, worship, and trust without the crippling fear of rejection or being hurt.
— John 8:36; Romans 8:1

I have compassion and understanding for others.
— 1 Peter 3:8

I do not hate, or walk in unforgiveness.
— 1 John 2:11; Ephesians 4:32

I catch the enemy in his deceitful lies.
I reject those lies and choose to believe God’s Word instead.
— John 8:44; 2 Corinthians 2:11; 10:5

I don’t get tired when I study, pray, minister, or praise God; but I am alert and full of energy.
As I study, I become more alert and energized.
— 2 Thessalonians 3:13; Isaiah 40:31

Truth about actions

Work is good. I enjoy work!
— Ecclesiastes 5:19

I do my work excellently and with great prudence–making the most of my time.
— Ecclesiastes 9:10; Proverbs 22:29; Ephesians 5:15-16

I am a responsible person.
I enjoy responsibility, and I rise to every responsibility in Jesus.
— 2 Corinthians 11:28; Philippians 4:13

I am creative because the Holy Spirit lives in me.
— John 14:26; 1 Corinthians 6:19

I am a believer, not a doubter.
— Mark 5:36 KJV

I am a doer of the Word. I meditate on the Word all the day long.
— James 1:22; Psalm 1:2

I study the Word of God and I pray.
— 2 Timothy 2:15; Luke 18:1

I have humbled myself, and God has exalted me.
— 1 Peter 5:6

I do what I say I will do, and I get where I am going on time.
— Luke 16:10; 2 Peter 3:14

I don’t hurry and rush; I do one thing at a time.
— Proverbs 19:2; 21:5

Truth in general

I prepare my heart and lift up my hands in prayer!
I leave all iniquity behind me.
My face is bright with innocence.
I am strong and free of fear.
I have forgotten my misery; like water flowing away.
My life is brighter than noonday.
My darkness is as bright as morning sunshine.
Hope gives me courage.
I am protected and I rest in safety.
I lie down unafraid, and many look to me for help.
Job 11:13-20 NLT

“The Way To Happiness” — Psalm 119:1-8

1) I order my life in integrity and I am guided by God’s word.
For it is written:
“You’re only truly happy when you walk in total integrity, walking in the light of God’s word.”

2) Joy infuses every part of my being as I keep Your ways with my whole heart, always seeking to do only what pleases you.
For it is written:
“What joy overwhelms everyone who keeps the ways of God, those who seek him as their heart’s passion! They’ll never do what’s wrong but will always choose the paths of the Lord.”

3) Your laws give me direction and I follow them all, because I trust that You have clearly outlined the best path for my life.
For it is written:
“God has prescribed the right way to live: obeying his laws with all our hearts.” 

4) It is my earnest desire to bring you glory and not shame with my life, for your laws inspire me to live righteously.
For it is written:
“I long for my life to bring you glory as I follow each and every one of your holy precepts! Then I’ll never be ashamed, for I take strength from all your commandments.”

5) I let a spirit of gratitude inform my will, and I walk faithfully in step with you, trusting You to finish the good work You have begun in me.
For it is written:
“I will give my thanks to you from a heart of love and truth. And every time I learn more of your righteous judgments, I will be faithful to all that your word reveals— so don’t ever give up on me!”

The Abundant Life — Psalm 119:17-24

1) I seek to serve and obey you, to walk in your truth and the life You desire for me, as revealed in Your Word and Your Holy Spirit.
For it is written:
“Let me, your servant, walk in abundance of life that I may always live to obey your truth. Open my eyes to see the miracle-wonders hidden in your word.”

2) Because life is short and I don’t have my own wisdom for daily living, I seek Your guidance first and foremost with a passionate desire, as much as my next breath!
For it is written:
“My life on earth is so brief, so tutor me in the ways of your wisdom. I am continually consumed by these irresistible longings, these cravings to obey your every commandment!”

3) I know sometimes Your ways of holy living seem foolish to those who are considered leaders and experts; but I choose to remain confident that You guide my decisions in the best direction. I know You will reward my faithfulness to Your laws and my desire to always please You.
For it is written:
“Your displeasure rests with those who are arrogant, who think they know everything; you rebuke the rebellious who refuse your laws. Don’t let them mock and scorn me for obeying you. For even if the princes and my leaders choose to criticize me, I will continue to serve you and walk in your plans for my life.”

4) I find great joy in taking the advice of Your words and following their light. Your words give me life! They completely satisfy my heart! For it is written:
“Your commandments are my counselors; your word is my light and delight!”
